Batman and the Batman costume have been a part of the American experience since May of 1939 when he appeared for the first time in Detective Comics #27.  Batman’s creation was part of a call that was put out for the development of more superheroes due to the overwhelming success of Superman comics.  Batman’s dark character was somewhat of an immediate hit with the comic’s readers.

One of the things that have stayed pretty much the same with Batman over the years is the story of his origin.  As a young boy Bruce Wayne witnesses the murder of his parent’s by a mugger named Joe Chill.  At their graveside the young Bruce Wayne vows to wage war on all the criminals in Gotham City.  Bruce starts his intensive physical and mental training, but realizes this won’t be enough to battle crime and decides he needs a persona that will instill fear in all criminals.  At that moment a bat flew through the window and the Batman costume was born.

Bruce Wayne’s real life identity is as a millionaire playboy, although recently he got an upgrade to billionaire. As Bruce Wayne he is decidedly unheroic, but when he dons the Batman costume you know all hell is about to break loose.  Even know Batman has no super powers he does bring a wide variety of capabilities to the table.

• The Batman costume incorporates the imagery of a bat to frighten criminals.
• Batman uses a number of vehicles in his crime fighting such as the Batmobile, Bat plane, Batboat, Batcycle and the Batsub.
• His utility belt contains most of the equipment he uses for his crime fighting, such as the Batarang.  At times it can be truly amazing how much this belt can hold.
• All of his various vehicles are well armed, but never for direct use against the criminals and are simply used as a way to remove obstacles.

The Batman costume

The Batman costume was originally conceived as black and gray, but do to achieving a consistent coloring from the ink in use at the time the Batman costume became black and blue.  During the sixties the Batman costume was reworked into a campier version with lighter colors.  In the late eighties the Caped Crusader’s costume was returned to its darker roots, which is the one where more familiar with today.

The Batman costume is probably the one costume that has the most variety to choose from of any superhero costume.  There are collector edition costumes all way down to the less expensive costumes that you find in most stores.  Batman has also generated a rich array of supporting character costumes such as Batgirl, Robin, The Joker, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn.
