Like The Flash the Green Lantern Costume and its accompanying power ring has been worn by a number of different earth defenders since its creation in July of 1940 by the forerunner of DC comics.  The power possessed by the Green Lanterns has also continued to morph over time, with an example of that being the rings power which was originally magical but in more modern times is a strictly technological creation.  The individual Green Lanterns are part of a larger organization known as The Green Lantern Corps, which is sort of an intergalactic police force.

Some of the individuals that have donned the Green Lantern Costume since 1940 are, the original Green Lantern Alan Scott, Hal Jordan who was a test pilot, Guy Gardner who was originally the power rings second choice to Hal Jordan and Kyle Raymer a struggling freelance artist.  These are just some of the best known wearers of the Green Lantern costume with a couple of others making short appearances in the comic.

The Green Lantern costume and power ring come with a number powers and abilities that are bestowed upon their wearer.  Chief among these are as follows.

• The wearer can create objects made of green energy and they can be of any shape, size or complexity.  The energy can also be used to grab objects.
• A force field can be generated to protect the user of the ring and to provide a protective bubble during space travel.
• The user of the ring can render himself or herself invisible.
• There are light beams with varying power levels can be generated from harmless multicolored beams all way up to highly destructive plasma blasts.
• The power of flight is also one of the abilities that come with wearing the Green Lantern costume and ring.
• The ability to generate wormholes and travel across space.
• With the use of several rings time travel becomes possible.

The list above of powers and abilities is by no means an exhaustive; the list is just too long to list. Every new recreation of the Green Lantern costume also adds something new.  This is easy to understand because the power ring has been described as the most powerful weapon in the universe and is limited in its power only by the wearer’s willpower and imagination.
