Ever since Superman took to the skies in 1938 Superheroes have been a huge part of the American culture. Yes Superheroes and the Superheroes costume are uniquely American, but like so many other things with their roots in this country Superheroes and the Superheroes costumes have spread around the globe.  As a matter of fact you would be hard pressed to find a country in the world where they haven’t heard of Batman, Superman or the X-Men. One other strange phenomenon that has happened is that the worse the economy becomes the more popular anything with Superheroes becomes. This only makes sense though since people will generally turn to some sort of escapism when times are bad.  So it looks like superheroes are the real popular for some time to come.

The world has always had its heroes and villains with the gods of Rome and Greece playing both parts with ease.  Later on heroes like Robin Hood and The Scarlet Pimpernel came into being as part of folklore.  It wasn’t until the golden age of comics though when Superman, arguably the first superhero, was created.  Superman and his superheroes costume became a template by which all other superheroes were created.

With the country still on the midst of the great depression and World War II looming superheroes gave the country a great way to escape the turmoil.  During the golden age of comics many of the great and lasting superheroes were created.  Heroes such as Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman and Green Arrow can all trace their births to this time.

After World War II though a war weary population lost interest in superheroes and wasn’t until the 1960s that a lot of the older characters were recreated and newer ones were added to the mix.  Upstart Marvel Comics added a new type of superhero to the profile in the 1960s known as the antihero by creating The Hulk and The Punisher.  The antihero was either a monster, such as The Hulk or someone like The Punisher who didn’t care how the criminal ended up.

Another boost was given to superheroes as film technology began to accelerate and by the end of 1990s it became possible to do things with computer generation that was impossible with a living actor.  In the 2000’s the computing power the latest generation of computers has made it possible to seamlessly integrate a computer generated model of an actor and have the audience barely notice that he was replaced.  Think of what will be possible in the years ahead.

The Superheroes Costume

The comic book superheroes costume has a number of generic features that are generally seen on most if not all costumes.  Tops among these are…

• The costume is generally made of an extremely form fitting material that clings to the heroes body and accentuates the usually copious amount of muscles and other dominant physical features.
• Some sort of icon or letter is imprinted on the costume to designate the character or his/her affiliation.
• The superhero costume may or may not have a cape, most do not.
• Other items such as a utility belt may or may not be present.

These are just the highlights and many superhero costumes have become icons in their own right, such as Supeman’s.

Yes Superheroes are everywhere you look these days, in comic books, the movies, at conventions and on every street in America on Halloween. Now for some really good news!
